So…Am I Really Going To Write A Blog?
There have been numerous occasions when I have found myself holding forth on some topic or other (usually related to the theater) and someone (usually a friend) will say, “I can’t believe how much you know! You should write a book!” My response has always been the same: “Nobody’s interested in what I have to say. And besides, the idea of all the work that it would take is exhausting to even think about!”
So, no, I won’t be writing a book.
But, when I had to decide if I wanted to include a Blog in my website I recalled my response to writing a book. My first thought was, “Seriously, does anyone care what I have to say?” My second thought was, “Do I have enough to write about to keep a Blog going for more than a few months? Or worse, weeks?” And, finally, I thought, “Do I really want to commit to doing the work it would take to keep something like this going?”
Well…do I?
In considering the question—and, trust me, I have considered it—at length—it occured to me that throughout my career there have been so many fellow performers who have been willing to share their experiences and answer my questions about our profession. I remember a wonderful hour and a half cajoling Christopher Plummer into sharing stories about the actors and directors he’d worked with. Was it just possible I might also have stories that my fans would find amusing?
Might I have advice aspiring actors might find enlightening? After all, I am often asked how I got into acting, as well as what tips I might have for young performers who dream of following the career path I’ve been on for the past half century. I had to admit I’ve always enjoyed sharing my experiences and counsel. Could I actually be of use to these young hopefuls?
“But I know NOTHING about blogging,” I worried.
If I did do this, would once a week be often enough? Too often? How would I organize the topics? Or would I need to? Or even want to? Could I simply write about whatever is on my mind that week? Should I take suggestions from whatever followers I attract?
As I contemplated all the questions I would need to answer, I realized I had already decided to give this Blog idea a try.
So…here goes. I hope you’ll join me on this adventure. Who knows? It might be fun to see where it takes me.
Where it takes US.
